Occupy the Dance Floor

When we settled on the 60s Summer of Love era as a theme for the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band’s Dance-Along Nutcracker, Clara’s Magical Mystery Tour, we didn’t know the entire nation would get into the act. In July, we had no idea that by Thanksgiving thousands of people would have taken to the streets to demand a fundamental shift in societal values – values that place people before profits, democracy before capitalism. Demands that pair perfectly with a chorus of Kumbaya.

San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band leads San Francisco’s Veterans Day parade

As reported in the SF Chronicle City Insider, Think Progress, the Wall Street Journal One Spot, and Towleroad, the SFLGFB will be the lead unit in San Francisco’s 92nd annual Veterans Day Parade. Celebrating the end of the US military’s Don’t-Ask, Don’t-Tell (DADT) policy, parade organizers have invited our marching band to lead their parade. The parade steps off on Market Street at 11 am, on Friday, November 11, the precise anniversary of the signing of the WWII armistice that Veterans Day marks. [More Information]

2011 Dance-Along Nutcracker® – Clara’s Magical Mystery Tour

December 11, 2011 – 11 am & 3 pm Family shows!
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, 701 Mission Street (@ 3rd), San Francisco

Sugar Plum wannabes, step on up! Everyone’s a star at the Dance-Along Nutcracker®. Here you dance to your own choreography, as the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band performs favs from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Ballet. This year, Clara and her Nutcracker take a trip through a psychedelic groovy Peter Maxx world punctuated by music from the ’60s / ’70s, and the Rat King is the Leader of the Pack. Gala! performance is for grownups only and features dancing and cocktails with holiday hors d’oeuvres.

Scott Shelp

Scott Shelp joined the SFLGFB in 2007 and currently serves on its Board of Directors. He plays saxophone and clarinet. Scott formerly performed with BandTogether and the Gateway Men’s Chorus in St. Louis, Missouri and the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles. Scott is a registered nurse and lives in San Francisco.

Danny Weinstein

Danny is an active SF Bay Area trombonist with groups such as the Bay Area Rainbow Symphony (BARS) and the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band (SFLGFB).
