Pete Nowlen took the podium this Fall as the 11th conductor of the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band. He was Guest Conductor for the Freedom Band in the “Through Seneca Falls and Selma and Stonewall” community concert.
Mr. Nowlen was Artistic Director and Conductor for the 2013 Dance-Along Nutcracker®: Nutcrackers of the Caribbean! held December 14/15 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
Mr. Nowlen’s first concert as SFLGFB Artistic Director was “A Festival of Ensembles,” 8pm September 20, 2013, Ebenezer Herchurch, 678 Portola Drive, San Francisco. Following lively chamber ensemble performances, the full band reassembled under Nowlen’s baton to perform Holst’s Second Suite in F and Clifton Williams’ Symphonic Dance No. 3, Fiesta!.
Mr. Nowlen has served as University of California, Davis’ Director of Concert Bands since 2002, as a member of the UC Davis faculty since 1988, and as a member of the California State University, Sacramento faculty since 1990.
Mr.Nowlen is active as an orchestral and chamber musician and conductor. He is Opera Musical Director at CSU Sacramento. He is artistic director of Sacramento’s VITA Academy, Camerata California (a chamber choir), and the Rancho Cordova Civic Light Orchestra. He was a member of the French horn section of the Sacramento Symphony from 1987 to 1996.
