Dance-Along Nutcracker 2017 – About The Show

“[O]ne of this city’s most delightfully idiosyncratic events.”

— Wall Street Journal

What is the Dance-Along Nutcracker®?

The Dance-Along Nutcracker® is a casual, fun and family-friendly show, combining the classic music from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite with a live musical adventure featuring a talented cast!

This year’s show centers on the high seas adventures of Captain Drosselmeyer and his pirate crew as they seek out the lost treasure of Peg Legs Tchaikovsky! Throughout the show, the audience is invited to “Dance-Along” to the ballet, allowing everyone the opportunity to express themselves in a welcoming and supportive environment! Pirate costumes highly

For parents, it’s the perfect first live music concert, especially for those kids who might not be able to sit still through an entire performance.

For families, it’s a fun, silly way to ring in the holiday season!

And for adults, it’s the best way to feel like a kid again, as you tug on a tutu and twirl to the Waltz of the Flowers!

This zany San Francisco holiday tradition was started in 1985 as a fundraiser to support the LGBT community, and has evolved into the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band’s signature event!

Concocted in the spirit of the “Sing-It Yourself Messiah” by Wayne Fleisher, director of the SF Tap Troupe, and first directed by the Band’s conductor, Jay Kast, the Dance-Along Nutcracker® has been featured in national media, including NPR’s All Things Considered, The Wall Street Journal, Good Morning America, The Today Show and many more!

The Dance-Along Nutcracker® truly exemplifies the mission of the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band: to promote LGBT visibility and build bridges among communities through public performance.

About the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band

The San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band (SFLGFB) was founded in 1978 by Jon Simas at the height of Anita Bryant’s anti-gay crusade. As the first openly gay music organization in the world, SFLGFB has inspired the formation of lesbian and gay bands, choruses and performing troupes world-wide. Named the “Official Band of San Francisco,” SFLGFB has promoted visibility and built understanding between gay and non-gay communities through public musical performances for nearly 40 years. Each year, SFLGFB presents its award-winning Community Concert services, its beloved fun-filled holiday production, the Dance-Along Nutcracker® and performs at numerous parades and civic events throughout the Bay Area.
