Dance-Along Nutcracker® — December 2015

The Dance-Along Nutcracker®

The Dance-Along Nutcracker® is one of San Francisco’s most celebrated holiday events! Named as “Best Bets for Holiday Dance,” the Dance-Along Nutcracker is a zany audience participation show for children and adults. Created in 1985 as fundraiser targeting primarily the LGBT community, the Dance-Along Nutcracker has evolved into SFLGFB’s signature event that now attracts a diverse audience consisting of 65+% families with children.

Using wit, artistry and ingenuity, each year the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band selects a theme and blends it with Tchaikovsky’s classic Nutcracker Suite to create a fun-filled musical production. For select songs, a large flashing “Dance-Along” sign signals the audience to tug their tutus on and pour onto the dance floor to pirouette beneath the spotlights with the cast.

The 2015 show entitled: “The Nutcracker of Oz” marked the 30th anniversary of the Dance-Along Nutcracker. The colorful history of the Dance-Along Nutcracker was printed in the December 3, 2015 edition of the San Francisco Bay Times. From Broadway Musicals, to Pirates of the Caribbean to the Land of Oz, the Dance-Along Nutcracker has been entertaining SF Bay Area audiences for three decades and plans to continue for three more decades!

The 2015 Dance-Along Nutcracker cast included Donna Sachet, Joe Wicht, Flynn De Marco, Leigh Crow, Zelda Koznofski, Noah Haydon and Ruby Vixen – all local celebrities in the LGBT performance world. The show was written by SFLGFB’s own Heidi Beeler together with Flynn De Marco with choreography by Marilyn Fowler. Under the baton of SFLGFB’s Artistic Director Pete Nowlen, “The Nutcracker of Oz” was a hit as it took the audience on a wild and crazy adventure over the rainbow to the Land of Oz.

The Dance-Along Nutcracker offers four shows during the two day run. Tickets are affordably priced and offer student and senior discounts. SFLGFB also offers “Friends & Family Ticket Packages” for groups of four or more. Through the “SFLGFB Community Ticket Grant Program,” each year the Band provides complimentary tickets to Bay Area nonprofit organizations that serve low-income children and families.

As a beloved San Francisco event, Bay Area companies and media rally to support the Dance-Along Nutcracker by investing as event partners and sponsors. Partners for 2015 included: SFBayTimes/Betty’sList, KOFY TV, iHeart Radio, Parent’s Press, Brio Financial.

The Dance-Along Nutcracker is a casual, fun and inviting show (no formal dress-code or dance experience required); yet more importantly, an event and a celebration where truly, no barriers exist; be it age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity – or even talent. As a result, the Dance-Along Nutcracker has become a holiday favorite for families, couples and singles of

ALL sexual orientations and gender identities.

San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band believes in the power of music to bridge communities; San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band’s goal is to deliver a powerful core message of equality, diversity and inclusion! The Dance-Along Nutcracker embodies SFLGFB’s belief that the joy and magic of music and dance is blind to age, color and gender; it is the great remover of differences and dissolver of barriers; it births unity, cooperation, celebration and is hysterically FUN! The Dance-Along Nutcracker truly exemplifies SFLGFB’s mission.

See you in 2016!
